OTS air cargo – recurrent & further training for experienced X-ray screeners
How do shipping crates with computer components look like when X-rayed? Or containers with loudspeakers?
Do you know how dense material like wheel rims appears on X-ray images?
And would you spot an IED hidden in a container of semi-automatic rifles?
Direct and indirect air carriers have to meet regulatory requirements which ask them to deploy non-intrusive security measures. Such may be X-ray screening, explosive trace detection (ETD), or sniffer dogs. OTS air cargo screening helps to prevent high-risk pallets or break bulk from being loaded on aircrafts – hence impeding risks during flight. Training screening personnel prohibits exploit of vulnerabilities that might pose threat on international air cargo security.
Today’s evolving air cargo security challenges require reliable, experienced screeners. Besides the theoretical general conditions of their area of operation, screeners have to thoroughly familiarize themselves with their practical duties and train their ability to recognize dangerous situations quickly and correctly.

Often freight can neither be moved nor opened as easily as passenger baggage, hence OTS air cargo steps in. It allows aspiring screeners to analyze objects that are subject to cargo screening and learn how to detect them. This training module on X-ray image interpretation is designed specifically for personnel who inspects pallets and air cargo containers. The simulator combines X-ray images in different categories and additional know-how to familiarize trainees with both freight and threat items, thus improving detection performance.
Regular and genuine training improves screeners’ ability to correctly assess threats – quick and reliable detection of dangerous objects is enormously important in highly-sensitive areas such as aviation. Only frequent training allows security personnel to contribute to increasing global security.
OTS air cargo perfectly complements the other products of the OTS family which enable employee training in basic and advanced courses. As with all of STI’s other OTS computer-based training courses, all images are recorded in .hif file format of the manufacturer Smiths Detection – lossless, high-quality original image files provide optimal conditions for learning and practicing. Of course all relevant image enhancement features of the X-ray machine are provided: Students can view the bag using image enhancement features such as ‘NEG‘, ‘SEN‘ or ‘OS‘. The simulated keyboard, an accurate copy from Smiths Detection X-ray machines, facilitates authentic, practical training.
OTS air cargo hence enables screeners to identify IEDs, detect threat items, and handle dark alarms.
Our software solutions are offered in packages which not only include theoretical and practical teaching, but also extensive evaluation, and are rounded off by online and offline support, as well as updates.
