Besides the theoretical general conditions of their area of operation, screeners have to thoroughly familiarize themselves with their practical duties and train their ability to recognize dangerous situations quickly and correctly. Hence, OTS primary CBS allows aspiring screeners to discover objects that are subject to cabin baggage screening and learn how to detect them. This basic training module on X-ray image interpretation is designed specifically for personnel who screens carry-on luggage in accordance with aviation security regulations. Tailored to the steadily increasing requirements in civil aviation, the simulator combines different categories and learning procedures to familiarize trainees with both daily and threat items, thus improving detection performance.

Regular and genuine training improves screeners’ ability to correctly assess threats – quick and reliable detection of dangerous objects is enormously important in highly-sensitive areas such as aviation.

Only frequent training allows security personnel to contribute to increasing global security.

OTS primary CBS is based on the STEP methodology, a pedagogical guideline that says from easy to difficult – from uncomplicated to challenging.

OTS Modul - Avsec CBS

Images are structured in four units: information, recognition, marking, and alarm. Hence, beginners first learn what everyday objects such as toothbrushes or smartphones look like in an X-ray image. For each item there is a description and definition as to which group of objects it belongs (e.g., weapons), which material it consists of (e.g., metallic), and which actions are to be taken if such an object appears at the screening point (e.g., inform police). Moreover, students are taught to recognize items in X-ray images and mark relevant items, such as electronic devices. STEP guarantees for lasting learning success as it combines teaching and testing in a unique manner.

OTS primary CBS perfectly complements the other products of the OTS family which enable employee training in basic and advanced courses. As with all of STI’s other OTS computer-based training courses, all images are recorded in .hif file format of the manufacturer Smiths Detection – lossless, high-quality original image files provide optimal conditions for learning and practicing. Of course all relevant image enhancement features of the X-ray machine are provided: Students can view the bag using image enhancement features such as ‘NEG‘, ‘SEN‘ or ‘OS‘. The simulated keyboard, an accurate copy from Smiths Detection X-ray machines, facilitates authentic, practical training.

OTS primary CBS hence enables screeners to identify everyday objects in cabin baggage, detect threat items, and distinguish between permitted and prohibited items.
